Getting More from Maps, Field Trips and Podcasts
Geography is easiest to understand when you combine different ways of looking at a place. A topographic map shows you the shape of the land, a field trip lets you feel the slope underfoot, and a good conversation explains why the landscape looks the way it does. The resources on this site are designed to be used together rather than in isolation.
Reading Queensland's landscapes on a map
Queensland covers an enormous range of environments, from the subtropical floodplains around Brisbane to the ranges of the Great Dividing Range, the reef coast and the dry interior of the Channel Country. When studying a map of any part of the state, start with a few basics:
- Contour lines reveal ridges, valleys and escarpments, and closely spaced lines mean steep ground.
- Drainage patterns show how rivers such as the Brisbane River collect water from their catchments, which helps explain flood behaviour.
- Land use and settlement often follow the terrain, with towns clustering on river terraces, coastal plains and transport corridors.
Preparing for time in the field
Fieldwork rewards preparation. Before heading out, look over a map of the area, note landmarks you expect to see, and think about questions you want answered. Queensland's climate calls for sun protection, plenty of water and sturdy footwear, and conditions can change quickly in the wet season. Our field trips page outlines the kinds of excursions the society runs, and it is always worth checking the events listing for current details before you plan.
Listening and learning between outings
Podcasts are a convenient way to keep learning on a commute or a long drive. Listening to an episode about coastal processes, urban growth or water management, then looking at the same area on a map, turns passive listening into active study. Browse the podcast shelf for topics that match your interests, whether you are preparing a lesson, studying for an exam or simply curious about the country around you.
