Preparing Your Kit for Queensland Fieldwork

Field geography in Queensland rewards preparation. The state stretches from the subtropical south-east to the tropical north, and conditions can shift quickly between coastal lowlands, ranges and the drier inland. Whether you are joining one of our field trips or heading out on your own, a few practical habits make the day safer and more productive.

Power and navigation

Many people now rely on phones for maps, GPS tracks and photographs, which drains batteries faster than expected. A portable power bank or a vehicle jump-starter with a USB outlet can be a sensible addition to a day pack or glovebox, particularly on longer drives where mobile coverage is patchy. Even so, carry a printed topographic map and a basic compass, and learn to read contour lines before you need them. Paper maps never run flat, and they encourage you to understand the shape of the land rather than simply following a blue dot.

Weather and terrain

South-east Queensland summers bring heat, humidity and afternoon storms, while winter mornings inland can be surprisingly cold. Check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast before leaving, pack more water than you think you will need, and wear sun protection year-round. Creek crossings and unsealed roads can become impassable after heavy rain, so plan an alternative route and let someone know where you are going.

Recording what you see

Good fieldwork is as much about observation as equipment. Keep a simple notebook for location, time, landforms, vegetation and soil colour, and photograph features with something for scale. These notes become valuable when you compare sites later or contribute to discussions at our events.

When choosing gear, consider durability and how it suits your plans rather than chasing a bargain, and always read product safety instructions carefully. For further reading on landscapes and regional geography, browse our publications.
